HBIGS PhD Awards

HBIGS proudly announces the implementation of the newly established HBIGS PhD Awards.
The HBIGS PhD Awards are awarded annually, commencing in 2027.
Three prizes, amounting to EUR 30,000 in total, are awarded for scientific excellence and commitment of outstanding doctoral candidates and principal investigators of HBIGS.
Whereas the student prizes are at the personal disposal of the award recipients, the prizes for the host labs are designated to improve lab infrastructure, to aid realization of research projects, and to foster international cooperation.

Prize structure

1st Prize: EUR 15,000
2nd Prize: EUR 10,000
3rd Prize: EUR 5,000
One third of the prize money is awarded to the doctoral researcher, two-thirds is awarded to the host lab.

Eligibility & Nomination

a) HBIGS Doctoral Students:

  • PhD defense in 2026 (defense in 2027 for 2028 award etc.)
  • PhD duration (from starting date to defense date): max. 1700 days (4.6 years)
  • At least one PhD-related 1st author publication, accepted or published in a peer-revewied, high-level journal until 3 months after defense

Additional achievements might be taken into consideration.

b) HBIGS Principal Investigators (PIs):

  • PI acts as FGA or GGA and supervisor of award-winning doctoral candidate
  • PI spent at least 70% of the time of the doctoral thesis as a member of the „HBIGS Active Faculty”
  • PI is a member of an institute of Heidelberg University

Award candidates, i.e. PhD students and PIs, will be nominated by the HBIGS Executive Board based on the criteria above; no application required.

Evaluation & Award presentation

The thesis supervisor and one TAC member of shortlisted candidates are asked to provide supportig letters.
The final decision is taken by the HBIGS Executive Board.
Winners are honoured during the HBIGS Annual Meeting.
